Theme: Dreams

In sleep, fantasy takes the form of dreams. But in waking life, too, we continue to dream beneath the threshold of consciousness, especially when under the influence of repressed or other unconscious complexes. ...

A dream that is not understood remains a mere occurrence; understood, it becomes a living experience.

Library News

The library is back on an almost-normal schedule--open on Mondays (11 a.m. to 5 p.m.) and Saturdays (12 noon to 3 p.m.). We had a good response to the request for volunteers to work in the library, thereby allowing us to keep a reasonably consistent schedule. Remember, we staff on a volunteer basis and things happen at the last minute; unexpected changes may occur. We will keep a current schedule on the door.

In the last six months over, 30 new texts have been added to our collection. Many of those came from an anonymous donor, as well as from Bunny Brown, Richard Prescott, and Micki Voegtlin. Many thanks to each of you. We are also adding to our video tape collection. Borrowing of tapes will require a deposit (based on the value of the tape) payable by personal check or credit card. The deposit is returned when the tape is returned to the library.

Cataloging of materials continues. All texts have been entered into a Microsoft Access database. By January, user-friendly instructions will be available to search the database, which includes multiple author/editor fields, title field, and up to four subject fields for each title. Hard copies of the database are already available for use in the library but are limited to alphabetical lists of titles, authors, and donors.

For members who make regular use of the library, you probably have noticed boxes of books scattered throughout our space. We are bursting at the seams. We should have new bookcases early in the new millenium that will help. In spite of our limitations, we are making an effort to make the journal collection more complete. If you have back issues of these journals you don't want to throw away, please consider us as a repository: Journal of Analytical Psychology (especially 1995-current), Psychological Perspectives, Harvest, Quadrant, and Spring (we are missing 1969, 1974, 1989, as well as volumes 52 & 59). Journals may be designated "for library use only," ensuring they will not become lost. Currently we are entering the journals into a Microsoft Excel database. Hard-copy references will provide a chronology of authors and titles in each journal, and authors listed alphabetically with cross-referenced titles, journal volumes, and page numbers.

We are especially interested in input from Society members regarding titles important for our collection. If you have read a text or seen a video you think especially good for our members, please let me know (I'm in the library most Mondays). Also, I am putting together a list of recommended reading for our web page. At first it will lean to the more traditional, but it be updated periodically. Recommendations will be greatly appreciated.

President's Message

Our current season is off to a good start. The two recent programs by Michael Horne and Ladson Hinton were well attended and greatly appreciated. The board has continued to work on the plans and projects we set out with last fall. The series of dream workshops by Michael Horne, announced in this issue, represent the first return to small-group programs since Karen Campbell's book study meetings. Thanks to Lucretia Devine for coordinating that. While there are no definite developments to report, meetings and discussions are continuing.

The sustaining efforts in other areas by all of our volunteers continue to provide vitality to the Society. Peter Elting has once again completed arranging a full series of stimulating presentations and is already getting leads on next season. A belated word of appreciation is due to Erwin Buske who, because of workplace demands, stepped down as Treasurer last spring. Many thanks, Erwin, for your time and contributions.

The membership survey has concluded with a response rate of about 34%. Thanks to everyone who took the time and trouble to reply. (Editor's note: For more information about the survey results, please see the printed Society newsletter.)
